REVIEW: Big Sister at the Station Hotel Redcar 27th August 2005

Saw this band recently at the Station in Redcar, oh my god, has to be the best female rock vocalist I have ever heard. Their version of Skin's "Look But Don't Touch" was simply awesome. Her voice is raw power and makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. What the hell is this woman doing singing in a pub? The band were tight, accomplished musicians, altogether a superb package. I would highly recommend them.

LATEST NEWS: The link June 20th 2006

Big Sister at Ugthorpe Lodge Met some Goths in Summerfields Whitby on the afternoon of the "Big Sister" Ugthorpe gig. They said they were off to Spa for the evening to see "Frankenstein" and 5 other bands. Tickets had cost them £35 each ? they thought our "free" gig with Big Sister was a great deal!

They were right. Starting with a series of rock classics 'Whisky in the Jar “, "Black Night", “ Look but don't touch" they continued with a slower version of "Rocky Mountain Way". Their version of Free's "Wishing Well" started the second spot and the band continued to please. Singer Linda Malcolmson has a most powerful voice and she is ably accompanied by Stan Thompson (Lead Guitar), Peter Flint (Bass) with Chris Bennett on Drums.

For those who prefer old chart numbers they covered "Nutbush City Limits", Queen's I Want to Break Free requested by their loyal following and gave great renditions of "A Mess of Blues" and the Stones' "Paint it Black". Time flew by and after three encores they ended the evening with "Highway to Hell". Great night. "Big Sister' play Ugthorpe Lodge again on 24th June

Trevor and Elaine Paine.

REVIEW: Big Sister at the Station Hotel Redcar 29th December 2006

Big Sister are a big favourite at the Station and there is always a full house whenever they appear there, On this particular evening there was an even bigger crowd than usual and I had to fight my way to the bar.

As I was getting served the band started with their version of Queen's "Tie Your Mother Down." Which got a great welcome. These were quickly followed by "Whisky in the Jar' (Metallica version) and "Run to You" (Bryan Adams). Linda was at her best and the crowd was jumping, Stan on lead guitar was playing his usual wonderful solos, well supported by Peter on bass and Chris on drums.

The band have been together for over two years now and lots of rehearsals and performances in various pubs have helped them to become a really tight unit. They continued with Linda singing a sexy version of "Look But Don't Touch" by Skin. More numbers by Judas Priest, Deep Purple and The Firm were followed by a couple of the bands' own numbers including a number called "Dirty Gertie" that had half the crowd trying to get onto the tiny dance floor. After a short break Linda came back on with just Chris on the drums accompanying he. with Janis Joplin's 'Mercedes Benz" quickly followed by "Take Another Little Piece of My Heart," Two more up tempo rock numbers had the whole place jumping then 'A Mess of Blues" originally by Doc Pomus and of course since recorded by many others. Elvis included.

By this time the pub was even more crowded and after playing numbers by Wishbone Ash and the Stones among others Linda announced the last number. This of course was greeted by the whole crowd shouting for more so of course they played some more and it was almost an hour later before they finally signed off with Zepplins "Rock n Roll." By the end of the night the place was really rocking it was with still more shouts for more that the band eventually managed to get off the stage.
